The Yellowstone Club in particular has seen extraordinary growth since the start of 2020, according to Meldman, and many families looking to relocate have also set their sights on Driftwood Golf & Ranch Club outside of Austin, and Troubadour Golf. & Field Club in Nashville. Other clubs have seen a substantial increase in sales to young families, a demographic not typically attracted to golf communities. After all, the perception is that they are for retirees.
Meldman himself claims to have a home in each of his 27 communities. If he had to pick a favorite, he says, his spread at Baker’s Bay Golf & Ocean Club would top the list.
Located on the Bahamas island of Great Guana Cay, Baker’s is perhaps the crown jewel of Discovery’s portfolio and a place close to Meldman’s heart since he began developing it more than two years ago. decades. “As soon as I set foot on the island, I knew I could create something phenomenal,” he says. “It had great beaches and unlike other islands in the area which are flat as a pancake, the topography of the contours and sand dunes was amazing.”
Over the next 20 years, the three-mile stretch of waterfront Meldman set aside for Baker’s grew into a thriving community with 220 homes, a golf course, tennis courts, sports center nautical and a village with a grocery store and a restaurant.
But in 2019, Hurricane Dorian hit and ravaged the island, as well as Baker’s Island, beyond belief.
“Most of the community was wiped out,” Meldman recalled. Baker’s suffered about $250 million in storm damage, he says, but the only way forward was to rebuild from scratch.
Currently, the development has completely come back to life and embodies a classic discovery experience. Facilities include an 18-hole Tom Fazio golf course, pickleball and tennis courts, farm-to-table restaurants, spa, market, and on-site medical staff. The Outdoors program is also a highlight and offers members the chance to enjoy destination-specific activities. At Baker’s Bay that means snorkeling, bone fishing, boating and kitesurfing, while at Silo Ridge options include clay shooting, horseback riding, archery and hiking. .
